Abstract

Sinology for years has been extended to the studies of contemporary Chinese culture and society. This article displays an exorcist healing ritual from Taiwan to explicate that even modern patients seek complementary and alternative medicine from traditional folk medicine and religious ritual when Western biomedicine fails. The first part of this article brings in some essential viewpoints from medical anthropology and some research outcomes from the studies on Taoist medicine. The second part describes detail procedures of the exorcist healing ritual performed by a Taoist master in Baoan temple, Taipei. The third part explains the etiology of Taoist medicine. They are horoscope, the system of spirit killers, and deatj pollution. The forth part discerns the curing mechanisms are evoking the repentant of the patient and transferring the illness to the paper-made substitute body of the patient.
