Abstract
Mosques and madrasahs are the institutions where Muslims congregate to perform their religious duties and carry out religious activities. Religious lectures and sermons are organized by these institutions to educate the Muslim community on the teachings of Islam. Lectures on hadith studies such as learning hadith manuscripts, talaqi on hadith manuscript with sanad and samaa’ al-hadith programs are regarded as efforts to provide the community with better hadith understanding. This research is aimed at studying the effectiveness of hadith teachings by identifying the level of understanding among hadith class attendees in the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah mosque and Al-Mawaddah madrasah in Shah Alam, Selangor. The research methodology involved quantitative and qualitative methods. Questionnaires were distributed to 400 respondents from the two institutions. The findings reveal that 87.45% of the sample claim that their understanding of hadith and daily rituals improved greatly; while 10.35% of the sample state that their understanding has improved while only 2% respondents declare that they have slight improvement. No respondents claim that there is no improvement, while a mere 0.2% are unsure. Hence, the main religious body in Selangor, Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor (JAIS), should provide more classes and lectures on teachings of hadith in mosques and madrasahs in the state of Selangor.
