Abstract

The tradition of Quran memorization rooted in talaqqi and musyafahah with a teacher is a primary and proven approach that ensures the accuracy and blessing of knowledge transmission. However, the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in the digital era opens up new opportunities to enhance the memorization process through intelligent, self-directed, and interactive tools. This study aims to explore how AI can function as a complement to traditional methods in strengthening memorization mastery and reducing the burden on teaching mentors. Using a qualitative methodology, the study analyzes two AI applications specifically designed for Quran memorization—Tarteel AI and Memorize Quran AI—as samples. The discussion focuses on key features of the applications, their capability to provide real-time feedback on recitation, and the potential for personalized learning. Findings indicate that AI can support memorization efforts by identifying recitation errors, enabling flexible self-review, and fostering systematic repetition practices. Nevertheless, AI cannot replace the role of teachers in cultivating discipline, etiquette, and deep understanding of the Quran. Therefore, a hybrid approach that combines the strengths of tradition and technological advancement should be explored further. This study recommends that AI-based applications be used as supportive tools within the tahfiz education system, while maintaining the teacher’s role as the central pillar of spiritual guidance and Quran memorization methodology.
