As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

SARE invites submissions that fall within the "Aims and Scope" of the journal, as outlined in the "About the Journal" page.


Scholarly articles and interviews should be about 6000 words in length and should not normally exceed 8000 words. Creative pieces should not exceed 6000 words for prose and fiction, and 3 pages for poetry. Poems in Southeast Asian languages are accepted for publication if accompanied by English translation. Book Reviews should be between 1000 and 1200 words in length. For any queries about book (and other) reviews, please contact The Editor, sarejournal@gmail.com.


The author's name, institutional affiliation (for scholarly essays), and mailing addresses (e-mail and postal) should be provided on a separate cover page of the Microsoft Word document to facilitate blind reviewing.


Documents should be double-spaced and each paragraph should be indented. Spelling should follow the Oxford English Dictionary. Double quotes with single quotes within should be used, whilst passages of more than 50 words should be indented. Notes, if used, should be placed at the end of the article, consecutively numbered in Arabic numerals (i.e. 1, 2, 3 etc.), and listed under "Notes" before "Works Cited".

All quotations in the main text should consistently be in double quotation marks. Titles of books and plays should be italicised throughout, while titles of poems, articles and short stories should be in double quotation marks. References should be parenthetical, and the "Works Cited" will list full bibliographical references.


SARE asks contributors to observe the Modern Language Association Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (MLA) convention. Full details can be found at http://www.mla.org/.

Contributors should also include a brief abstract of between 150 and 250 words for each critical article.  This should be followed by a maximum of 6 key words in the article, and a brief biographical statement of the author (85 words maximum).


Only work that has not been published, either in print or on the web, and that is not being considered for publication elsewhere should be submitted. Authors undertake to pay any copyright fee incurred in the use of material already protected by copyright.


We consider submissions year round.

GUIDELINES FOR SPECIAL ISSUES 


SARE welcomes proposals for special issues related to the aims and scope of the journal.  Authors should note that Special Issue articles are also double peer-reviewed and that the same criteria of quality, originality, and significance apply to their articles as to regular articles.


All Special Issues must receive initial approval from the Editorial Board before the papers are submitted. Proposals should be emailed to the Editor-in-Chief at sarejournal@gmail.com.


There are two formats proposals can take:


1: A detailed formal proposal which includes the titles and abstracts of the proposed articles. This proposal format must contain:


* The title of the Special Issue;


* A brief CV of the proposed Guest Editors (usually no more than three);


* A statement of the Special Issue’s significance for SARE and a draft introduction if  possible;


* Titles and draft abstracts of each of the proposed articles and any draft papers that are available. A minimum of eight papers or abstracts of papers should be included (do liaise with the Editors if you have fewer abstracts than the prescribed minimum);


*  Brief details of contributors.


2: A proposal for a Special Issue Call for Papers. This proposal format must contain:


* The title of the Special Issue;


* A brief CV of the proposed Guest Editors (usually no more than three);


* A statement of the Special Issue’s significance for SARE;


* A draft Call for Papers that is to be issued on the journal's website. 


Guest Editors are expected to oversee the peer review process for the Special Issue but final acceptance approval for each paper will be given by the journal's Editorial Board.


The Editor-in-Chief and Guest Editors will liaise directly with each other regarding the progress of the Special Issue and any queries that arise throughout the process. In cases where a Call for Papers is issued, the Editor-in-Chief will liaise with the Guest Editors to finalise and release the Call for Papers as widely as possible. Guest Editors will also be given full support and guidance regarding the use of the online submission and reviewing system used by SARE.
