Abstract

Kampong Ayer in Brunei Darussalam is famous for its local trade between ‘Padian‘and ‘Pengalu‘. They sold various types of merchandise to the residents of Kampong Ayer. Such as fish, vegetables, fruits, cakes (kuih-muih) and others food stuff. In addition, there were also manufactured goods and handicrafts made from bronze, silver, gold and fabrics that were exchanged with the ‘Pengalu‘. At the beginning of the 1970's, the ‘Padian‘slowly moved to ‘Tamu Kianggeh‘to continue their business activities. ‘Tamu Kianggeh‘ is situated in the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan and as a meeting place for Bruneian's especially the residents of Kampong Ayer and people from other districts, who came to find their daily necessities as sold by those who were previously ‘Padian‘.
