Abstract

This study is aimed at exploring the Arabic language learning strategies (LLS) employed by students of higher learning institutions in Kelantan when learning Arabic language. It is also aimed at identifying the significant differences in using LLS based on the types of institution. It involved 200 students in semester three from two institutions (100 participants from KIAS and 100 participants from APIUM). This quantitative survey used a questionnaire adapted from SILL (Oxford, 1990) with the addition of a metaphysical construct (Kamarul Shukri, 2009). Mean and standard deviation were applied to investigate the usage of LLS among the respondents. Meanwhile, t-test was applied to see whether there is a significant difference in using LLS based on type of institution. Results show that the LLS usage by students was average. Metaphysical strategy is frequently used by the students, whereas memory strategy is least used by them. It also shows that there is no significant difference in using LLS based on type of institution.
