Abstract
Environment problems are too critical and complex to be resolved only through science, technical and legislative approach. Participation and involvement of the public is important and relevant as they are stakeholders in development. In Malaysia, public involvement in environmental planning and discussion is provided for under the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and Town and Country Planning Act 1976. Public involvement particularly in the planning process is very important because the power that they possess under these legislation can bring about significant changes. Further, the public have a right to requisition for changes to projects that have a negative impact on the environment and society. Nevertheless, the trends in Malaysia indicate that the public are not really interested in participating in the planning process or being involved in environmental issues. This article examines the involvement of the public inenvironmental issues in Malaysia.
